Impasto art technique
Impasto is a painting technique in which paint is applied thickly enough to build a visibly raised surface. Brush and palette knife marks usually remain obvious, so the paint itself becomes part of the visual structure of the work.
How Impasto is used
Artists apply oil or acrylic paint in thick strokes, ridges or peaks, usually with a brush or palette knife. The technique can be used across a whole painting or only in selected areas such as highlights. With oils, thick passages are normally applied over thinner, well dried layers to reduce cracking risk. Impasto mediums can increase body and help retain marks while changing drying behaviour.
What Impasto looks and feels like
Raised, tactile paint, visible brush or knife marks, strong surface relief, crisp ridges and peaks, and pronounced highlights because light catches the textured surface. It can feel energetic and expressive, or controlled and sculptural depending on the application.
