Side view of a stretched box canvas
What is a stretched box canvas?

A finished canvas with visible depth and no outer frame

The canvas is stretched around a timber support, fixed at the back and supplied ready to hang. Its visible sides and depth are part of the presentation.

  • Slim and deeper profiles are available
  • Edges may be wrapped, mirrored or colour finished
  • Suitable for oil, acrylic and canvas based work
  • May be shown alone or inside a tray frame

The precise stretcher depth and edge treatment should be agreed before production.

Works on paper

Paper needs a separate framing approach

Watercolours, drawings, pastels and prints normally need backing, spacing and glazing.

Framing questions

Is an unframed canvas ready to hang?

Yes, when supplied stretched with suitable hanging fittings.

What is the difference between a box canvas and a tray frame?

A box canvas is the stretched artwork itself. A tray frame is an outer frame with a small shadow gap.

Does the frame change the overall size?

Yes. Tray and traditional frames add to the external dimensions.
