This is the third piece in my “Blossoming” series and once again I created a graduated watercolour painting with swirling lines and shapes, from Payne’s grey, to turquoise, and then light lime green and into a light cream yellow. I then painted tiny circles across the whole painting in gold metallic watercolour. Each of the three dimensional flowers was cut from the watercolour painting in three different sizes, and I’ve bent the petals upwards to give them a more realistic three dimensional feel. I’ve glued some of the flowers petals closed so they look more like buds opening. The back of each flower is painted with bright orange watercolour which refelects onto the backing board and gives the whole piece a lovely glow. The flowers are decoratively arranged in a graduating colour square in the centre of the frame. They are mounted using insect pins in various heights to add to the three dimensional effect of the piece. The whole piece is framed within a white glazed (Perspex) deep box frame. The result is a vibrant and colourful modern relief design revealing individual flowers on closer inspection, with different shadows cast from the up-turned petals depending on the direction of the light.
