Kinetic Interference

Project Details

My piece involved three panels of birch plywood each measuring 1.5m x 1.6m, then thorough sanding, lacquering and priming. Once the wood is touch soft I painted with precision tape hundreds of lines with three gradients running together simultaneously. Each gradient had a colour theme RGB (red tones, green tones , blue tones)

A steel plate and steel rod welded to the plate is secured to the back of the wood panels, and extends out through a hole drilled in the wood panel. Then a flanged bearing is secured to the rod, and to the bearing a clear acrylic disc is attached.

The piece is very strong as the bearing is heavy duty. It can be spun fast or slow without damage.

I am fascinated by kinetic artwork which allows the viewer to participate and engage within what they are seeing.  In my Kinetic interference piece I combined industrial skills with fine art and graphic methods of producing imagery. Often my ideas are stimulated from making animation and always end up as a physical piece.
