Set in an imaginary enchanted forest, the small, seemingly insignificant image of the wanderer is a subtle yet central figure to the piece. It evokes the deeper mind as it navigates its way through the beguiling nature of dreams and night walking, always on the edge of sleep. As the ??wanderer?? blends seamlessly into her environment, she becomes a RǬckenfigur, a compositional device used in antiquity that invites the viewer to walk with her through winding paths that continue beyond the frame, allowing the imagination to travel into the unseen beyond of imagined worlds. Inspired by the mystical landscapes of artists such as Peter Doig and Daniel Ablitt, this piece was an exceptional labour of love that took several weeks of printing and testing to complete. The translucent effect on the leaves was a particularly challenging aspect created using a unique method developed by the artist in the lithographic process, and which enhances the work??s ??other-worldly?? quality. Pouele used a pre-war printing press to execute this 160-year-old process, printing onto archival paper using natural linseed based inks hand-mixed by the artist. The wanderer in the landscape is a recurring theme throughout the collection, with the exploration of the imaginary forest being set as the backdrop for many works to come.
